Do you feel like all the water content in your body is evaporating whenever you go out and stay out for long hours? This season the heat can affect you very much if you expose too much to the sun. Playing games, exercising, etc. in this humid weather can get you severe sun stroke as well preventing your body to cool down itself. So it’s necessary to take proper precautions and care to prevent this.
What Is Sun Stroke?
Your body is naturally capable of cooling it down in humid weather by sweating through skin. However if you dehydrate or your body loses water content, then sweating is not possible anymore and this may result in heat stroke or sun stroke. The body temperature may rise to 104 degrees or even higher in this case which isn’t healthy at all.
How Can Your Body Get Overheated?
If you work or spend much time under sun or even if you work hard under shade in humid weather you may get sun stroke or heat stroke. Few reasons behind this could be dehydration, alcohol consumption, etc. This usually affects children and aged people. Even those in their young and middle age can get affected if
- They are obese or over-weight.
- They are diabetics.
- They have heart or kidney problems.
- They are not habituated to humid weather.
Symptoms:
- Headache
- Confusion or agitation
- Dizziness
- Fatigue
- Dry skin
- High temperature
- Fast heart beat
- Vomiting
- Hallucinations
What Should You to Prevent This?
Hydrate Well
The main reason behind sun stroke is dehydration. So, even if you aren’t thirsty, sip water throughout the day in such weather. Make sure you avoid caffeinated and alcoholic drinks. In the morning rink a glass of lemon water mixed with some honey. Tis helps to beat the heat in majority cases.
Eat More Fruits
Fruits rich in water content should be taken more in this weather. Prefer water melon, lemon, kiwi, cherries, etc. among which watermelon proves to be best of all.
Say No To Alcoholic and Caffeinated Beverages
Both alcohol and caffeine can dehydrate the body and increase heat at the same time. So, if you don’t want to worsen the condition, avoid them completely in such weather.
Choose Clothes Wisely
Light colored clothes help you keep cool while dark colored clothes absorb heat. So wear only light colored clothes. The same way prefer cotton over any other fabric since cotton allows your skin to breath and let your sweat flow easily. Wear loose clothes instead of tight fitting clothes.
Stay Indoors As Much As Possible
Staying outdoors for hours can lead to sun stroke. So, try to stay indoors as much as possible especially in the afternoon when the sun is at its peak. Go out only if required. Also keep the environment cool at home and open all the windows and doors.
Apply Sunscreen
Sunburnt skin prevents skin from cooling down. So apply a good sunscreen to prevent sun burn. Wear a hat and wear cooling glasses as well to prevent the rays reach you directly to some extent. You can also use an umbrella if you want.
Reduce Your Physical Activity
Avoid exercising and other heavy physical activities in hottest part of the day, i.e., from 10 am to 4 pm. Else you will seat a lot and lose your body water content as a result you get dehydrated. If you exercise in the morning or evening when it’s cool, make sure to hydrate yourself.
What Are The Complications of Sun Stroke?
Heat stroke should be treated quickly; else it may worsen the condition. If you do not treat it and your body temperature crosses 40 degrees centigrade, then it can even damage your brain, heart and other body parts permanently. It can stop you from sweating completely, make you weak, give you a fit and collapse you completely. In such cases medical attention becomes important.
So you know what is sun stroke and complications it can cause you this hot season. Thinking about these complications itself gives us a heart stroke. So, it is always better to prevent it than cure it later after suffering from all those problems, isn’t it?
